5/22/2023 0 Comments Colorization by Wil Haygood![]() Wil came on the show to talk about his new book, which is so much more than a chronicle of influential Black movies. How generous? He blurbed my book Six Weeks in Saratoga way back in early 2011 before the book came out that summer. His talent, ability, and rigor might only be surpassed by his generosity. Wil has also written books on Sugar Ray Robinson and Thurgood Marshall and Sammy Davis Jr. Wil has been a long-time reporter for The Washington Post, where his piece on Eugene Allen, the butler for several presidents in the White House became a book and was the basis for Lee Daniels The Butler, starring Forrest Whittaker and Oprah Winfrey. ![]() It was a live event, rebroadcast with my slick editing skills for you. This conversation I did as part of Goucher College’s MFA in Creative Nonfiction. He’s here to talk about his latest book, Colorization: 100 Years of Black Films in a White World (Knopf, 2021). I’m going to repeat that: Wil Haygood is here. ![]() Sponsor love: West Virginia Wesleyan College’s MFA in Creative Writing Become a Patron! ![]()

5/21/2023 0 Comments Before she knew him novel![]() Hen is somewhat of a true crime buff, and she was especially fascinated with this particular case when she first heard about it. ![]() ![]() At first, I wondered that too, but it soon becomes clear that Hen is convinced the trophy is linked to the unsolved murder of a former student of the prep school where Matthew teaches. You might be wondering why a soccer trophy would make Hen so suspicious. Hen finds herself falling under Matthew’s spell, but when she spots a soccer trophy on display in his study, she begins to wonder if her neighbor is hiding some very dark secrets. He’s handsome and charismatic, the kind of guy people are drawn to without really understanding why. Matthew is a teacher at a nearby prep school. ![]() Then, Hen and Lloyd begin getting to know their neighbors, and their lives take a terrifying turn. When she tries to imagine her future, she only sees good things. She’s finally found the right medication to control her bipolar disorder, and her marriage is a good one. Hen works as an illustrator of children’s books, and she’s pretty happy with her life. Hen and her husband Lloyd have recently moved into a lovely house in a small town not far from Boston. Unfortunately for me, Before She Knew Him didn’t turn out to be at all what I was expecting. And if that sounds like it echoes real-life recent events-the crisis at the border where families are being separated and held in what some call concentration camps-it wasn't intentional. He's discussing his latest novel The Institute, which follows a group of children with supernatural abilities who are abducted by a mysterious organization. 5/21/2023 0 Comments Slightly dangerous book![]() ![]() In the 1950s, the CIA launched a top-secret program called MKULTRA to look for drugs and other techniques to use in mind control. The research, published in the Yearbook of Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine, suggested that the treatment could one day revive people who are hemorrhaging blood too quickly for doctors to repair their injuries. The dogs were resurrected, and while some had permanent damage, most were no worse for wear. Three hours later, the team gave the dogs a blood transfusion, and an electric shock. The team rapidly killed the dogs by flushing all the blood from their bodies and replacing it with oxygen- and sugar-filled saline, according to the researchers from the Safar Center for Resuscitation Research at the University of Pittsburgh. In 2005, American scientists created another pack of zombie dogs. But that was just the first time scientists had created zombie dogs. ![]() ![]() Sheets', New York Review of Books, 24 January 1980: 31-32. Like Sebastian, Klemperer registered the systematic shrinking of the physical and intellectual space around him. Like Sebastian, Klemperer was in a brutal and merciless way rejected by this society only because he was Jewish. Perhaps the closest example of a similar diary is Victor Klemperer 's I Will Bear Witness: A Diary of the Nazi Years, 1933-1941. Of course Sebastian's diary was not the first literary description of the nazification of a European society seen through the eyes of a Jewish intellectual. Sebastian's diary covers the not-so-glorious period of three anti-Semitic dictatorships in the Romanian national history: the dictatorship of Carol II (1938-40), which followed the short-lived, rabidly anti-Semitic government of Goga-Cuza (December 1937-February 1938) the dictatorship of Ion Antonescu in alliance with the Iron Guard (September 1940-January 1941) and the dictatorship of Antonescu without the Iron Guard (1941-44). ![]() 5/21/2023 0 Comments One night at the call centre![]() The present paper deals with the issues related to the life of IT Professionals as portrayed by ChetanBhagat in his novel One Night The Call Centre.
